Philippa Schuyler was a child prodigy pianist. She had a rather odd upbringing. Her father was a black journalist and essayist. Her white mother was a former bathing beauty from a family of slave owners. Her maternal grandparents believed that mixed race marriages could solve the country’s race problems. Her mother believed that a diet of raw foods would produce genius so she fed her daughter a diet of raw fruits, vegetables and meat.
Philippa began playing piano as a child and by the time she was a teen she was touring the world. In her thirties she stopped playing the piano and followed her father into the career of journalism. She was killed in a helicopter crash while covering the war in Vietnam.
