Music Review: Lloyd-Tru EP

We haven’t heard from Lloyd in 5 years and he hasn’t been relevant in nearly ten.  But this Tru EP mmay prove that we shouldn’t count him out.

In the titular opener of this 5 track EP, “Tru,” he references his hiatus with:

“Hey world, yeah I know it’s been a while / thought I’d come around to let you know what’s up now / no album lately so my mind is kinda up, down / I still been taking care of mama in the somehow / disappeared from the scene and left my old team / had to find a new approach to an old dream” There’s something very authentic about his lyrics and the tenor of his voice.

“Heavenly Body,” which features Rick Ross, has a more hip-hop sound, obvi, and is a little too busy for my liking.  But I appreciate a dirty song, and this one definitely delivers.

The closer, “Excited,” is my favorite.  It harkens back to 80s & 90s R&B, which is the only R&B I’ll ever need.

I think it was smart for Lloyd to ease back into music.  He gave us just a taste of what he can do but it was an utterly delicious spoonful.
